How my thoughts stumble, near you,
And I’m uncertain
How to say something simple,
Just three small words, “I love you”.
I guess I’m worried
That you might take it badly,
A silly old man,
Reaching far beyond himself
Just to tell you, “I love you”.
Until I say it,
We can go on being friends,
And I can go on
Dreaming that, some day, I’ll hear
You say the words, “I love you”.
So, I’ll be quiet,
And smile, listening as you
Tell me of your life,
Wondering if I’ll ever
Find nerve to say, “I love you”.
