My Heart

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

When it’s late at night,
And yours is the only heart
You can feel beating,
Do you wonder about mine,
And if it’s beating for you?
If you knew it was,
Would you feel good about it,
Or a little sad,
Because the beat of your heart
Is strongest for another?
My heart will still beat,
Like a solitary drum,
Keeping time with yours,
Quietly in the distance,
If you listen, late at night.

To Compare Her

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

I would compare her
To the dawn, after a storm,
But if truth be told,
The blush of her rosy cheeks,
Makes the dawn fade to grey.

I would compare her
To the music of the night,
When the cricket’s song
Fans passion’s fire into love,
But her passion is greater.

I would compare her
To the first flower of Spring,
Pushing through the snow,
But the glow of her warm love,
Creates an endless summer.

I would compare her
To the smile of a baby,
So gentle and pure
But the beauty of her smile,
Is more pure than an Angel’s.

To me, she is love,
The beginning and the end
Of all that matters,
Making it clear, that there is
Nothing to compare her to.

Islands

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

The nature of islands
is to be alone.
Though others may be near,
The island remains alone.
Time, and tide,
Working inexorably to
Wear it down,
Eventually reducing an island
To sand, swirling it around
Until all that remains,
Is a memory.
Given enough time,
Even the memory will
Vanish.

So it is with a man,
Entering into this world
Alone,
Seeing others nearby,
But remaining alone.
Life, like the tide,
Wearing him down,
Removing bits of him,
First a tooth, some hair,
His spirit,
Slowly, slowly, taking its toll.
And in the end, leaving only
A soul,
To be swept away on the tide,
And perhaps, a memory,
Waiting to vanish,
With time.

A Simple Fact

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Opening a door
That leads away from this world,
Brings you face to face,
With the fact that life and death,
Have always walked hand in hand.

Silence

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I am
Less than shadow
On your cloudiest day,
Less than your memory’s echo,
Silence.
